My name is Julia Gurney. I am currently pursuing my philosophy major with a political science minor. I was raised in Wichita, KS before moving to Fort Worth, TX. After my time at TCU, I plan on applying to law school in hope of working in the field of human/civil rights. This has influenced my topics during my Intermediate Composition: Writing and Argument class. As we studied the 1960s, I gravitated towards the topics that involved human rights; for example, equality and reproductive health services. The 1960s was such an influential decade because of the impact each movement had on America and the world. During the 1960s, activist Martin Luther King, Jr. had his most famous marches and speeches, the medical field had advancements that enhanced gender equality, and what our patriotic duty entailed was called into question. The 1960s brought Supreme Court cases with issues that are still debated today, in addition to their use as precedent to set ideology norms. Throughout this website different pop culture and historical references to the 1960s are examined as to their effect today. Three cultural events are discussed; the recording of the song Eve of Destruction; the making of the movie, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?; and women’s fight for reproductive rights.
